Oscar Raymond Turner (affectionately known as Pity) was born March 28, 1955 in Birdie, Mississippi to the late George Turner Sr. and Katherine Brooks Turner. He was the sixth child for the (rapidly growing) Turner family. He led a very rewarding and fulfilling life until his health started to deteriorate a few years ago. However, he departed this life peacefully on May 20, 2016, surrounded by family when God called him home.
He confessed a hope in Christ at an early age under the leadership of Superintendent Walter Dixon of St. Paul Church of God In Christ in Darling, Mississippi. The family moved to Arkansas where he attended Eliza Miller High School in Helena, Arkansas. After high school, he enlisted in the United States Army in 1975; his military assignments included overseas orders to Germany as well as posts in Texas and California. He was honorably discharged and returned to Helena in 1979.
Oscar worked for the University of Central Arkansas in Conway, Arkansas as Executive Chef until his retirement in 2012. Cooking was his passion and he was uniquely specialized in southern cuisine. During his leisure time, he was a die-hard Steelers fan; his black and gold jersey was his favorite. You could often find him either watching his Steelers on ESPN, listening to music on the radio or just relaxing on his front porch. Most importantly, he loved being with family and friends, he used humor and good food to express his unconditional love he had for those closest to him.
Oscar was preceded in death by one daughter, Kayla Turner; two sisters, Donna Faye Bowman and Yvonne Collier.
He leaves to cherish his loving memory, seven daughters, Markisha Turner Staple of Jacksonville, Arkansas, Niketa Turner of Helena, Arkansas, Royanna Turner of Little Rock, Arkansas, Erionna Williamson of Joliet, Illinois, Fiona Turner of Helena, Arkansas, Moiesha Calvin of Conway, Arkansas, Yosia Suggs of Helena, Arkansas; five brothers, George Turner (Sandra) of Chicago, Illinois, Alonzo Buggs (Bobbie) of Lambert, Mississippi, James Turner (Sheila) of Conway, Arkansas, Alcurtis Turner (Brenda) of Conway, Arkansas, Terry Turner (Cheryl) of Helena, Arkansas; five sisters, Emma Jean (Ezell) Johnson of Jackson, Mississippi, Clem Harrison of Chicago, Illinois, Genevieve Lindsey of Conway, Arkansas, Marilyn Turner Cottrell of Montgomery, Alabama, Rosemary Winford (Joe) of Conway, Arkansas; 18 grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and a host of uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
