In profound sadness, the staff of Veasley Funeral Home & Cremations, Inc. want to express our sincere condolences to the Swinney family. Wilma's earthly temple is now resting in the care of Veasley Funeral Home. Revelations 21:4 says, "And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death; nor sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain, for the former things are passed away." Be assured that in the days ahead you will surely gain strength from the memories of Wilma Swinney.

Wilma Jean Miller Swinney was born September 27, 1952 the third child of Frances Ella Gordon in Little Rock, Arkansas. 

Wilma accepted Christ at an early age attending Miles Chapel CME Church, currently known as Miles Memorial CME Church. Wilma attended Little Rock Public Schools.

Wilma met Michael Lawrence Swinney in Little Rock, Arkansas and united in Holy Matrimony February 18, 1977, until his passing in 1988. 

Wilma was a dedicated employee for Southwestern Bell for 30 years as a telephone operator where she retired.  She had many hobbies, including fishing, playing bingo, collecting elephants, and playing electronic video games.  Her favorite movie was the 1939 version of “The Wizard of Oz.  Her favorite foods were bacon and butter pecan ice cream.  Wilma was also the family’s life coach making daily calls to ensure that her demands were being met.

While attending Miles Memorial CME Church she was a dedicated member of numerous boards and auxiliaries. Wilma served many years as a member of the Cecil Williams Usher Board, Wesley Gill, Miles Memorial Missionary Society, Miles Memorial Stewardess Board, Chancellor Choir, Children’s Sunday School Teacher and Church Conference Secretary.

Wilma is preceded in death by her mother Frances Ella Gordon, sisters Ruth S.Turner and Shirley A. Ford, brother Lawrence C.  Thrower, grandparents Ed and Emma Gordon.

She leaves to cherish her memories:  daughter, Franchelle J. Dennis, sons, Eric L. Miller and Michael L. Swinney Jr.  sister, Lynda F. Houston, mother-in-law, Dorothy J. Johnson; sister-in-law. Corliss Johnson, grandsons, Melvin C. Dennis Jr, Montell L. Dennis, Marcus L. Dennis, Makell D. Swinney, Khiry D Nichols, Malcolm T. Dennis, granddaughter Makala J. Swinney, great grandchildren, Josiah A. Mayes and Amaya L. Dennis, aunt, Willie Mae Gordon and a host of nieces and nephews.


Visitation for family and friends will be held Friday, January 24, 2025 from 6:00pm-7:00pm at Miles Memorial CME Church, 1804 E. Capital Ave., Little Rock, Arkansas.


Celebration of life service will be held Saturday, January 25, 2025, 11:00am at Miles Memorial CME Church, 1804 E. Capital Ave., Little Rock, Arkansas 72202.


Committal service and final resting place will be held at Haven of Rest Cemetery, 7102 W. 12th St., Little Rock, Arkansas 72204.
